Dear Professor
:

Here is another version of %2Ascribing Mental Qualities to
Machines%1. I have changed it somewhat, especially in the section
on concepts defined in approximate theories, but I am don't think
I have succeeded in improving it much in spite of much effort.
I have read Dennett's paper, and I find that his views are more
similar to mine than anything else I have read. Some comments
emphasizing the differences have been added to my paper.

I am now rather dissatisfied with the paper, and if it were
to vanish I probably wouldn't rewrite it until I could treat all
of these matters with full sets of axioms which might be a long
time. However, enough people have found it interesting that I still
want to publish it. However, if you change your mind about publishing
it, I can understand that.

I won't be able to make more than trivial changes until about
October because of other commitments. If your plans are delayed, I
might give it another try then. Because the paper is in the computer,
the process of incorporating changes in the text and printing a new
version takes only a few minutes, so I can react quickly if I have
new ideas or if you want changes that don't involve much rewriting.
